Latest News

In the 100-year history of stainless steel, stainless steel has established its rightful place in the field of medical and health care. For medical use, corrosion resistance, easy manufacture and disinfection of equipment are key factors in ensuring their affordability, durability and hygiene.

As early as 1925, stainless steel was used as an expensive alternative to nickel-plated carbon steel equipment in surgical instruments. But by 1938, many manufacturers had abandoned nickel-plated materials entirely. The most commonly used materials for the production of tools and instruments are nickel-containing austenium alloys such as 304 (S30400) (when high hardness is not required) or Mars alloys (when hardness is required). However, some surgical blades, chisels, round chisels and other sharp instruments are still made of carbon steel, which, although sharp, can rust if cleaning and disinfection procedures are not carefully controlled. Device blades made of mars-hardened stainless steel are often less durable than carbon steel and need to be sharpened more frequently. Today, medical devices represent $30 billion worth of industry worldwide, while stainless steel accounts for the majority.

For the same reason, dental devices use the same alloy as medical devices. Stainless steel is also used in the interior of the mouth, dental equipment and sometimes in the crown. Typically, stainless steel does not produce a metallic taste in the mouth.

To prevent the spread of communicable diseases, hospitals and clinics must regularly clean and disinfect all parts and surfaces. Stainless steel is now used in all types of medical furniture, such as tables, carts, cabinets, infusion racks, beds, etc., as well as common components such as sinks, shower heads and bed pottys.

It is important to recognize that there is a huge difference between standard commercial grade stainless steel for implanted grades of stainless steel and other medical devices.

In Europe, for example, implants are defined as medical devices that are exposed to human tissue for more than 30 days. Implanted equipment is included in a separate standard specification with special requirements.

Forged Austrate stainless steel and high nitrogen stainless steel are used as surgical implants such as hip, knee, finger and shoulder joints, as well as plates, nails, wires and other fixtures. These materials were originally developed from (S31600) stainless steel.
