Whether through or blind, threading is one of the most challenging cutting tasks. Especially when it is in the last part of multiple processing steps, its importance is self-evident. Reliability is the primary consideration in the threading process, and if it fails, it will result in a huge waste of the entire nearly completed part. HiPIMS coating technology opens up great possibilities in this regard. The new coating material TapCon ®Gold has been developed specifically for HSS taps and threaded tools, making it ideal for internal threading tasks (see chart).

The internal thread sits on almost any part and covers including engine blocks and many other vehicle components, mobile phones and multimedia products. As long as there is a need for tightening or bolting, they cannot be separated. They are so common that few people in our daily lives notice them. However, the production of internal threads requires extensive expertise. Parts are usually machined before threading, such as milling, turning, and drilling, and threading is often the last step. "This makes threading a key process. If an error occurs in this machining step, the parts must be reprocessed in an expensive and time-consuming manner. In the worst-case scenario, almost completed workpieces become scraps, and the previous work is lost. Therefore, the reliability of the threading process is critical. Therefore, the taps used require not only a long service life, but also a constant threading quality and tolerances throughout their life. This places extremely demanding requirements on the coating. "Traditional TiN and TiCN coatings have been standard for threading tools for many years. The first significant improvement in coating performance has been achieved with the development of Tap-Con ®Gold coatings specifically for HSS tap scones and threaded moldingusing using HiPIMS technology. Gold coated materials open the way for the future. Mr. Manfred Weigand explained.
Torque is a key factor in thread production. The lower the torque, not only the safety range of tool failure is greater, but also the better the quality of the cutting or forming thread. Care should also be taken to prevent the cutting material from sticking to the tap, resulting in poor threading performance. TapCon ®Gold coatings offer high surface smoothness and high density, ensuring stable low torque and reliable non-stick performance during processing. The coating surface with a very low coefficient of friction ensures excellent surface and processing results. In addition, the high toughness of the coating material provides excellent protection against the cutting edge during tapping.
