![]() | Metal Cutting Fluid Reduces Tool Wear by More Than 20% |
When AMI, a precision manufacturer based in Tainan, Taiwan, purchased a new processing center, German machine tool manufacturers recommended the use of Blaser Swisslube metal working fluids. After discussions with Barzo experts, AMI's decision makers agreed to test and set ambitious goals: extending tool life, reducing tool costs and production costs, and improving the surface quality of workpieces. Basso's full assessment shows that all of these goals can be achieved when AMI converts the metalworking fluid to B-Cool 755.
Founded in 2008, AMI is a professional all-round manufacturer focused on high-tech products, including engineering electromechanical components, as well as precision processing of complex parts in the aerospace, automotive, medical, 3C, hydraulic, optical and pneumatic industries. The company has the world's most advanced multi-axis machining machine tools, specializing in turning, milling and drilling processes.
When AMI purchased a new processing center from Germany, engineers from the machine tool manufacturer recommended the use of Swiss Basso metalworking fluids. AMI then contacted Basso to find the ideal lubrication solution for the new machine. After initial discussions, AMI quickly learned that there was potential for optimization throughout the production process. "Our main goal is to extend tool life, reduce tool costs and production costs, and improve the surface quality of processed parts." Mr. Huang Jianxuan, Manager of AMI Aerospace Business Department, made a request.
"In addition to better cooling, better surface quality and shorter processing times, we are focused on improving dimensional accuracy," said Mr. Wu Ming-yin, customer service manager in Basso, Taiwan. In order to help customers find the most suitable metal cutting fluid, Basso experts need to conduct a thorough assessment of the production process, machines, materials and tools. This special solution ensures that the metalworking fluid becomes a 'liquid cutting tool', which in turn has a positive impact on parameters such as tool life, surface quality and production costs. "
After ami reached a consensus with Basso, the vertical lathe sesizeter, which produces aero engine parts, was tested for the first time, processing the superalloy material Inconel 718. After careful consideration, Mr. Wu suggests b-Cool 755. It is a water-soluble chlorine-free cutting fluid. Its properties include less foam in hard and soft water, good stability, corrosion resistance and minimal addition. "The B-Cool 755 was originally developed for use in aluminum and aluminum alloys, but it has also proved to be very good when processing materials that are more difficult to process. This metalworking fluid has helped many customers achieve longer tool life on a wide range of hard-to-cut materials. That's why we believe it can significantly extend AMI's tool life while saving costs and increasing productivity. Mr. Wu said.
The test was conducted in the fall of 2018 with very satisfactory results: the use of the new barbsorium fluid by AMI results in a significant reduction in tool wear. The tool wear on the front of the cutting tool is reduced by 21% and the side by 26%. "Not only has tool life and process stability improved, but the surface quality of the machine tool production parts has been optimized (see chart)," mr. Wu said. "

In addition to the above benefits, AMI is able to adjust process parameters to optimize cycle times and increase overall productivity based on tool wear. As the feed speed increases and the cycle time decreases, the operating cost of the machine is reduced. Most importantly, AMI can also reduce the total cost of metalworking fluids, saving up to NT$133,500 (RMB31,695) per machine per year.
