Variables that drive surface finish results

Although the principle of precision surface grinding may seem simple, the practice of surface grinding requires many years of experience because of the many subtle variations.

Like all skilled and productive mechanics, surface grinding specialists need to understand not only the behavior of different metals, but also certain variables of surface finish that will drive a precision grinder.

Feed and speed

In the case of precision plane grinding, the feed refers to the rate of three axes. It can be said that feeding is the primary determinant of achieving the desired surface finish.

Speed refers to wheel speed, but interestingly, wheel speed is usually constant in surface grinding. That's because even if the wheel does wear out -- a factor you'd normally think would require adjusting the wheel speed to maintain consistent grinding -- it's imperceptible relative to the diameter of the wheel.
