The usual standard for surface grinding services is also the motion principle that drives the grinder, but with one difference - the horizontal X-axis action provides side-to-side repetition and the Z-axis grinding action provides back and forth transmission. Precision Precision surface grinding machines feature automatic Z-axis, allowing the tiniest increments to be applied to each X-axis repeat of the workpiece.
Yes, you read that right - in the field of surface grinding, the vertical direction is the Z axis, while in milling it is called the Y axis.
And then the Y-axis. In precision surface grinding machine, the grinding wheel is usually not as wide as external grinding machine or centerless grinding wheel. The advantage of the Y-axis motion is that it allows a 1" thick grinding wheel to precisely grind surfaces that are more than 1" wide.
In fact, the workpiece can be many times wider than the grinding wheel. Each time the X-axis is repeated, the Y-axis moves slightly to produce the specified flat surface. In many surface grinders of different sizes, the same X-Y-Z principle applies.
