Raw Materials and their sources

If your supplier has to supply raw materials for your parts, this will have an impact on their costs and quotations. If you supply your own raw materials, you can control where they come from and how much they cost. But what happens if you're not sure which material to use?

Customers often ask metal cutting to recommend a material for their application. While metal cutting can't tell you which particular type and grade of stainless steel is best for your parts, we can point you in the right direction -- but only if we know the details of your application and what you need your parts to do. For example, we can recommend 304 or 316 stainless steel, depending on whether machinability or chemical resistance is more important.

Here, it's crucial to do your legwork and figure out which materials are best for your job. As a customer, you are in the best position to define your goals and choose materials with the right chemical composition for your application. If you are a third-party buyer or purchasing agent who is less familiar with the part design and the work that needs to be done, going back to the engineer and getting these details will help you choose the right materials and sources.
