When you think of EDM electrode materials, you probably think of graphite. Beginning in the early 1950s, when the material first flooded the electrode market, and continuing to this day, graphite remains the material of choice for 90% of US edM electrode applications. But what about the other 10%?

Long before graphite, there were metals. Among various electrode materials for metal edM, copper and tungsten are the first choice of many manufacturers. The unique combination of material properties resulting from copper and tungsten alloying is well suited for discharge machining of carbides, where electrical resistance and cutting stability are critical.

Thus, while graphite dominates the wider field of electrode materials for EDM, copper tungsten has a stable position as the material of choice for complex geometry, sharp angles, excellent wear resistance and cutting speed.
