Flexibility of metal laser printing

Laser printing of metals can also reduce the amount of waste in the production process. While traditional material reduction cutting methods involve removing material to create shapes, 3D laser printing of metals achieves shapes by adding the desired material.

As long as there is a metal powder, 3D laser printing can use a flexible range of metals, including titanium, stainless steel, inconel and cobalt-chromium, as well as brass, copper, bronze and precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum. However, while the challenges of 3D laser printing in an inert atmosphere have been overcome, some metals still cannot be properly annealed. For example, while tungsten can be "constructed" by 3D printing, the resulting tungsten metal blocks are too brittle to use.
