The bushing, as simple as it may seem, is critical to prevent the device from failing during surgery when it is subjected to high RPMS or other forces that could cause it to fail.
This is why metal bushings are sometimes used on the tips of catheters and similar devices when the tip must rotate at high speed on the guide wire. The tip allows for less wear on the end of the conduit or equipment.
For example, due to our processing capabilities in a metal cutting company, we are able to manufacture custom bushings for resection equipment used to treat PAD (peripheral artery disease) as well as certain cardiac applications. Although the device rotates at very high speeds, the tip bushing helps prevent wear and damage to the guide wire.
In addition, the tip is usually made from materials such as Elgiloy or MP35N -- a tough, corrosion-resistant alloy with tensile strength comparable to 304 stainless steel, widely used in the medical device industry. However, these alloys provide better wear resistance than 304 steel, allowing repetition without equipment tip failure.
