Where do you heat the metal is another factor

When you heat a metal, the atmosphere in which the process takes place is also important, as it has an effect on the surface and strength of the material.

For example, if tungsten is heat treated in a normal atmosphere, it will oxidize, making the surface finish porous. However, working in a controlled environment - such as vacuum or sealed nitrogen, argon or hydrogen - allows you to heat the metal without oxidizing it.

Low carbon steels can be annealed in a carbon-rich environment to harden the surface of steels with a high carbon surface with good fatigue and wear resistance. The technology is used to improve the hardness and durability of products such as carbon wire springs and forgings.

However, if "carburizing" is not the desired trait, annealing should be carried out in a low or carbon free environment.
