Annealing and heat treating metals: different

Annealing is often used interchangeably with the term heat treatment. Annealing is a specific method used to soften a metal in order to increase ductility and reduce brittleness.

Annealing can also be used to increase the uniformity of a metal and restore its ductility before further treatment. For example, when machining 316 stainless steel, it can pick up poor magnetism; However, annealing stainless steel can return it to (or very close to) its original non-magnetic state.

Annealing is carried out using special ovens under strictly controlled conditions. The metal is heated to a high temperature - usually slightly above the recrystallization temperature.

Materials are kept at high temperatures for hours to days and then cooled (very slowly in the case of steel and other ferrous metals).
