Why heat treatment of stainless steel and other metals?

Stainless steel, for example, is usually treated to increase its hardness; On the downside, it could also become more fragile.

Conversely, stainless steel can be heat-treated to increase its ductility, which helps to minimize cracking and improve machinability. However, this process may also reduce the hardness of the steel.

Thus, obtaining metals with desired properties - such as brittle stainless steel with high tensile strength but relatively low - may require multiple treatments at different temperatures and over different lengths of time.
