Description
A reasonable hard turning process can achieve 0.0028mm surface finish, 0.0002mm roundness and ±0.005mm diameter tolerance. The goal of hard turning is to take away at least 80% of the heat with the chips. This level of accuracy can also be achieved on the same machines for "soft turning" of pre-hardened workpieces, maximizing equipment utilization. But in some shops, the hard turning process is not fully exploited because of the wrong choice of inserts or whether the machine tool used is not rigid enough to withstand the pressure twice that of ordinary turning.
