Difficult to Process Titanium Alloy Material
90% of medical device implants are made of Ti6Al-4V titanium alloy, which is the most commonly used material for medical implants due to its lightweight, high strength and high bio-compatibility. Titanium alloy 6AL-4V is commonly used in hip, bone screws, knee joints, bone plate, implant teeth, spinal connectivity components. Titanium alloys have the characteristics of processing hardening. The cutting angle of the machining process is large, resulting in thin chips, and a relatively small contact area is formed on the tool. In addition, the high cutting force during machining, combined with the friction when the chip flow, will lead to the tool local cutting heat is too high. The poor thermal conductivity of titanium alloy makes cutting heat not transmitted quickly. As a result, a great deal of cutting heat is concentrated on the cutting edge and the tool surface. High cutting force, cutting heat will cause the production of crescent depression, and cause the rapid failure of the tool.
Relatively low elastic modality makes titanium alloys more elastic than steel. Therefore, too much cutting force should be avoided to ensure that the work piece bounces small. Thin-walled parts have a deformation trend under tool pressure, causing tremors, friction and even tolerance problems. The key to solving the problem is to ensure the rigidity of the entire system, and tools with sharp cutting edges and correct geometry are necessary. In addition, titanium alloy has the trend of chemical reaction alloying with cutting tool at high temperature, and its chips have the trend of welding to tool surface.
