Generally speaking, the simpler the chemical composition of the blank, the faster the cooling rate after forging; otherwise, the slower. According to this, for simple carbon steel and low-alloy steel cylinder forgings, air cooling is adopted after forging. Forgings of medium and high alloy steel with complex composition, pit cooling or furnace cooling should be adopted after forging.
Sometimes, during the forging process, the intermediate billet or forging is locally cooled to room temperature, which is called intermediate cooling. For example, in order to perform flaw detection or clean up defects on the blank, intermediate cooling is required. Another example is multi-fire forging, first forging the middle part and then both ends. After the middle part is forged, it should be cooled in the middle, so as not to affect the quality when reheating the two ends. The determination of the intercooling specification is the same as the cooling specification after forging.
