Surface roughness chart

Another type of metal surface finish chart may show the average range of surface roughness values that can be achieved using different types of manufacturing processes. It is helpful to know this, as surface finish can vary greatly depending on the processing used in production.

If having a specific surface on the finished metal part is critical to the success of your application, deciding between different cutting methods is an important step. In addition, multiple processes may be required to achieve a specific surface finish.

Each metal cutting process has its own characteristics (what mechanics call "witness marks"). They can vary to some extent and have certain limitations, again depending on the process.

For example, if the finished surface of the floor can be how smooth it is, a polish can be used to obtain a highly smooth surface. Alternatively, you can use grinding to create sharp edges or shiny surfaces.

You can find surface roughness charts to compare standard surface finish for various metal cutting methods, such as abrasive cutting, edM or surface grinding, as well as milling, turning, grinding or polishing. Note that as measured by surface finish, the smaller the number, the smoother or rougher the surface.
