Polishing is a meticulous process aimed at achieving a smooth and reflective surface on materials. It is commonly employed across industries for both functional and aesthetic purposes. This process involves the use of fine-micron or sub-micron abrasive particles combined with a liquid medium, rendering it a "wet" process.
The primary goal of polishing is to generate a reflective finish, often achieved using specialized pads that hold the abrasive particles. These pads, usually softer than the workpiece, gently abrade the surface, leading to minimal material removal, typically measured in microns. Prior to the polishing phase, the workpiece's surface finish is typically pre-treated to ensure it meets high-quality standards, often involving a "lapped" surface.
Polished surfaces serve various functions. They allow for effective sealing against high-pressure gases and liquids, cater to cosmetic preferences, and enable accurate measurement using optical flatness instruments. Moreover, polished surfaces reduce both surface and sub-surface damage, provide uniformity for processes like epitaxy, and enhance cutting tool edges for precision.
Various types of polishing methods exist, including those using soft or hard pads with conventional or special-purpose abrasive slurries, diamond abrasive slurries (water or oil-based), and diamond compounds with lubricants. Additionally, fixed-abrasive films, lapping, and diamond slurry polishing on composite or metal plates contribute to the diverse range of polishing techniques available.
When comparing lapping to polishing, differences emerge. Lapping results in a matte, non-reflective surface with a multi-directional lay pattern, often serving functional purposes such as coating application. On the other hand, polishing yields a reflective finish, often pursued as a secondary step, catering to sealing, cosmetic, and light-band inspection requirements.
The mechanics of polishing frequently involve the use of a polishing pad and water-based slurry to achieve the desired reflective or clear surface. Ensuring an unblemished and scratch-free finish is vital, often necessitating the use of caustic polishing slurries. Consequently, stainless steel components are preferred due to their resistance to these chemicals. Additionally, rinsing the workpiece at the end of the process cycle, often with water, ensures no residual staining from polishing media.
In terms of equipment, the differences between lapping and polishing systems are subtle. While both employ similar processes, the surface tension in polishing is generally higher due to the use of abrasive slurries. Polished surfaces exhibit greater surface tension, influencing the horsepower requirements for the equipment drives.
