Anodizing is an electrochemical process that brings about a transformation of metal surfaces into resilient, visually appealing, corrosion-resistant finishes characterized by an anodic oxide layer. While aluminum is the prime contender for anodizing, other nonferrous metals like magnesium and titanium can also undergo this treatment.

The anodic oxide structure originates from the underlying aluminum substrate, comprising solely of aluminum oxide. Unlike paint or plating, this aluminum oxide doesn't sit atop the surface but becomes an integral part of the aluminum substrate. This integration ensures that the anodic oxide cannot chip or peel, offering durability. Moreover, its meticulously organized porous composition allows for additional processes like coloring and sealing.

To carry out anodizing, the aluminum is immersed in an electrolyte bath containing an acidic solution. By passing an electric current through this medium, a cathode is placed within the anodizing tank. The aluminum assumes the role of the anode, causing oxygen ions to be released from the electrolyte. These ions then unite with the aluminum atoms present at the surface of the component undergoing anodization. Therefore, anodizing is essentially a controlled oxidation process, elevating a naturally occurring phenomenon.
