The basic structure of bone screws

Like ordinary wood screws that most people are familiar with, the structure of bone screws has certain basic features:


The head of the screw is a flat surface at the top that facilitates the insertion of the screw.

The tip is the other end of the screw, opposite the head.

The length of the shaft (or body) of the screw is measured from the head to the tip.

The screw spacing is the distance the screw travels at 360º per revolution.

The main diameter of the screw is the total thickness of the screw from one peak of the thread to the other peak on the other side.

The secondary diameter is the thickness of the screw, not the thread. This is important to know because the guide hole to insert the screw should be the same as the secondary diameter.
