Specific material considerations for bone screws

For more than a century, bone screws and anchors for orthopedic and dental use have been made of metal alloys. This means we spend a lot of time understanding which materials offer the right combination of high strength, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.


Today's manufacturers typically choose implant-grade materials that meet ASTM or ISO specifications. Therefore, the manufacture of bone screws with the right properties and functions requires Switzerland's ability to process a variety of different materials, each with its own unique properties.


While stainless steel is popular in medical devices and can be used in bone screws, the use of titanium has increased over the past few decades and a range of specialty metals have been chosen for their unique properties and advantages.


For example, titanium - available in pure and alloy versions - is typically used when the goal is to be light, strong or when the device needs to be mated or connected to another titanium component. Titanium screws are often used to treat mandibular fractures.


Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Ti-6 Aluminum-4 vanadium ultra-low Clearance) is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, strong and biocompatible. Strict control during smelting has resulted in higher ductility and strength of the material, making titanium ELI a popular and durable choice for bone screws and other medical devices.


NiTi is sometimes selected for its ability to withstand large amounts of stress without deforming. This means it can be used for applications where bone screws or other devices require stretching and slight changes without permanent setting.
