Automatic packaging operations use built-in go/do not go shunt to ensure quality during lights out operations. For example, the camera can check that products coming off the line are in good condition, and the machine can be shunted next to defective products or shut itself down if something goes wrong.
Robot resistance spot welding is widely used in continuous operation in the automotive industry. In fact, it's probably the image people most often think of when imagining robots working on an assembly line.
However, unlike the manufacture of cardboard boxes, this type of operation requires a different level of quality control. After all, you can't shunt the whole car very well because one weld is broken. How do you check that the electrodes are not malfunctioning somewhere on a very long and complex assembly line?
