Although the ivermectin in the drug may kill some microfilariae at recommended dose levels, the drug is not effective at clearing the microfilariae. After treatment of some dogs with circulating microfilariae, mild allergic-type reactions have been observed in clinical trials with ivermectin alone, possibly due to the death or moribundity of the microfilariae, especially involving transient diarrhea.
