Find chicks during breeding season
To allow us to locate young birds during the breeding season, we run a program to capture and tag wild adult northern mountain sandpipers in the spring and equip them with small VHF radio tracking tags. This allows us to use telemetry to track the birds and Identify nesting birds from May to September.
Once the chick hatches, we follow it closely until the chick is 14 days old. On days 3 and 10, we will identify the nocturnal site 1-2 hours before dawn and build a small fence (about 30 cm high) around it made of fine mesh. Once lit, we strip away the vegetation until the adult blushes and the chicks run to the edge of the fence. We were then able to capture the chicks, weigh and measure them, and put them back into the hands of their parents who were waiting patiently outside the pen.
