Like many professional disciplines today, the field of surface grinding services has many subspecialties that require specialized knowledge. For example, in addition to the simple task of dealing with cube shapes or the ends of shaped parts, many permutations can be achieved through the skillful use of different accessories.

There are also many technical and CNC drive features suitable for rugged standard surface grinders. These machines can be fixed into shapes, corners or chamfering, or even cut, and can be completely rounded for radius. When specific shapes are required, these methods are called feed lapping, molding lapping, cut lapping and/or contour lapping.
