Electrode materials

From our extensive experience working with engineers and technical teams to the art and science of perfecting automated micro-spot welding applications, Metal Cut offers a range of specialty refractory Metal electrode products including copper tungsten, silver tungsten and pure tungsten. Our electrode materials expertise is tungsten, molybdenum and their alloys, including copper tungsten and silver tungsten as well as carbide components and heavy metal electrodes. Our electrodes are used in high-speed, high-volume automatic resistance spot welding manufacturing environments and are well suited for EDM, especially for machining tungsten carbide workpieces.

Designed for resistance spot welding and electric spark forming

Among our electrode materials, copper-tungsten is by far the most popular material for resistance spot welding and EDM processing applications. Our electrode design and construction not only utilizes the right electrode material and the right tip and handle profile, but also employs an excellent bonding method in the manufacture of the electrode itself, helping to ensure superior welding quality.

For high volume production, our resistance spot welding electrodes achieve optimal welding of the required metal-to-metal surface contact and pressure. Our defection-free bonding (NDB) technology (which you can read about in our white paper better Together: Defection-Free Bonding of Resistance Spot Welding Electrodes) creates a resistive electrode that has better thermal conductivity, lower resistance, and lower electrical conductivity than a copper pair junction. Unlike silver brazing and press-fit techniques where electrodes are glued to the handle, our NDB method provides the highest level of thermal conductivity while reducing wear and extending electrode life.

Our electrode materials and THE NDB method work together to produce electrodes with the best bonding strength, thus providing better welding strength and consistency, minimum electrode adhesion and longest electrode life -- optimizing efficiency and welding quality. Due to the excellent conductivity of the NDB electrode to the handle, the electrode can be cooled quickly during conducting suspension. This avoids electrode burn and speeds up the injection cycle, further increasing productivity.

For edM formers requiring a variety of ingredients, we offer all standard proportions from small to large sizes, evenly blended throughout the module with superior density to eliminate porosity. Our powder metallurgy expertise produces materials that can be easily machined into final shapes, whether for your countersunk head applications or spot welding configurations.

Provide unique composition in electrode material

We even have a new proprietary ingredient that provides excellent speed and wear properties specifically for carbide discharge machining. This unique new material grade is C-EDM, which is even better than our own standard copper-tungsten electrode. C-edm has been proven to have 52% service life and cut at 25% speed, resulting in a significant manufacturing advantage.
