Do animals have personalities?

A growing theme in animal behavior research is the study of animal personality. Studying the personality of animals may sound counterintuitive, if not unscientific, at first, but the term simply refers to the consistent differences in behavior displayed by different individuals of the same species. By this definition, every pet owner has witnessed personality differences in behavior: like people, some birds are smarter than others; some fish are more aggressive than others; some dogs are more sociable than others .
