What are the restrictions on honing and grinding?

Of course, as with other machining and finishing methods, honing and grinding have limitations on what can be accomplished.

Honing is slower and more time-consuming than other processes, although improvements in equipment and tools continue to reduce honing times.

Honing also requires the workpiece and tool to float and rotate precisely so that the ID does not distort. For very thin workpieces, even the slightest hand pressure will create a slightly elliptical hole.

As we often say in metal cutting, grinding is as much an art as a science. Although manufacturers of grinding equipment have general guidelines and recommendations, many variables can still affect success.

Therefore, some degree of trial and error is part of most, if not all, package projects.
