What makes grinding and honing similar, yet so different?
Honing and grinding are often mentioned together, even though the processes are not the same. In fact, when honing and grinding in the field of more sophisticated metal parts, you might say that the two are very similar, but fundamentally different.
This seems like a contradiction, so let's take a closer look at why this assessment is indeed accurate.
What is grinding and sharpening?
Grinding is a grinding or polishing method used to create an accurate finish on a flat or domed surface of a part. Honing is an internal grinding method used to achieve precise surface finish and shape on tubes, holes, or bore ID.
The honing and grinding process is highly controlled. However, where they are used and how they are done are quite different -- both methods have strengths and weaknesses.
Why and when are honing and grinding used?
In general, honing and grinding are similar in why and when they were used:
Why is that? Honing and grinding are used to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions on metal parts.
What time? Honing and grinding is usually carried out at the end of the manufacturing process, when some fine tuning may be required to remove very small amounts of material or fine finish the finish on the part.
For example, while double-disc grinding for metal cutting is usually the last step in manufacturing, we can add a step and grind flat disk-shaped products such as gaskets. Here, grinding allows us to achieve higher dimensional accuracy and eliminate surface finish defects, ensuring a tight fit between the surfaces that need to be fitted.
