In the field of processing, turning tools such as lathes and milling machines are shining stars. In fact, they are processed for most people. However, in addition to machining, the ability to perform precision centerless grinding is a distinct advantage.
How does centerless grinding work?
Centerless grinding is one of several processes that use abrasive cutting to remove material from a part (workpiece). The process involves supporting the part on a fixed blade of the workpiece located between two rotating cylinders:
Adjusting wheel for controlling the speed and feed rate of parts (for feed grinding) or linear stroke (for feed grinding)
Larger abrasive wheel
The beauty of centerless grinding is that the workpiece is held in place by the pressure of the rotating wheel. No fixture, so simple setup, quick turnaround time. And because the workpiece is rigidly supported, there is no deflection during the grinding operation.
However, despite these and other advantages, mindless grinding has fewer practitioners than processing. Although centerless grinders have been around for nearly a century, many people struggle with the fundamentals of the process and how it works.
