A washer is a hole (usually circular) in a piece of material that is usually used to distribute the load on a threaded fastener. The washer is located between the connector and the nut, usually a flat metal ring. Other uses include spacers, springs (Belville washers, wave washers), wear pads, pre-display devices, locking devices. Rubber gaskets are also used in faucets (valves) to shut off the flow of liquids or gases.
