9 things to consider when treating metals: 1

Why include metal heat treatment in cut-off part specifications?
We have discussed elsewhere that thermal expansion may be a factor in determining how accurate the dimensions of metal parts need to be.
That is, if small differences in tolerances due to thermal expansion can also affect the performance of the part, it is wise to avoid specifying very strict tolerances where there is a risk of possible variations in ambient temperature. This means that changes can occur anywhere in the process, from part cutting and inspection to assembly and final use.
But what happens when you deliberately heat treat metals as a normal part of the manufacturing process? So what do you need to keep in mind when creating specifications for small cut metal parts, such as those we produce at our metal cutting company?
