Nitriding is somewhat similar to normal case hardening, but it uses different materials and treatments to create a hard surface composition. In this process the metal is heated to about 950°F (510°C) and then contacted with ammonia gas. The nitrogen in the ammonia gas enters the steel and forms finely distributed and strong nitrides on the metal surface.
