Cast iron is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content greater than 2.1%. In addition to carbon, its composition also contains a certain amount of chemical elements such as silicon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus and some impurities. Sometimes some other chemical elements are added. Cast iron, also known as pig iron, is an important primary product of metallurgical plants. Most of it is used for steelmaking. The other part is supplied to machine manufacturers to produce cast iron parts as the main charge for secondary remelting. Cast iron has low cost and good casting performance and serviceability, so cast iron is an important and commonly used structural material in modern machine manufacturing. Its weight generally accounts for 60% to 70% of the total weight of the machine.

Compared with carbon steel, cast iron not only has higher C and Si content (C2.5%～4.0%, Si1.0%-3.0%), but also contains higher impurity elements Mn, P, S, in alloy cast iron with special properties, also contain certain alloying elements. The existence and content of all these elements will directly affect the structure and properties of cast iron.

Since the carbon in cast iron mainly exists in the form of graphite (G), the structure of cast iron is composed of a metal matrix and graphite. The metal matrix of cast iron includes pearlite, ferrite and pearlite plus ferrite, which are equivalent to the structure of steel. Therefore, the structural characteristics of cast iron can be seen as graphite with different shapes distributed on the steel substrate.
